The 10th of January seems to be the day of the "110" emergency phone number and NHK’s morning dorama heroine Kurashina Kana (22) had the privilege of working as the general manager at an emergency call center for 1 day.
Kurashina came to the little PR-Event all dressed up as a policewoman and simulated receiving an emergency call. The fictional call came from a woman who reported that her bag got stolen. "What kind of garments did the criminal wear? Can you tell me the address of where you are at the moment?" She did a good job in getting all the important informations about the incident.
Having accomplished the important duty of being the general manager for 1 day, she said:
"The person at the other end of the phone usually seems to be in a panic, so I think the most important thing is to stay calm while talking with that person."
Last year around 1,752,000 people called the number 110 in Japan, that’s 46,000 more than the previous year. About a good third of all the incoming calls turn out to be not much of an emergency at all, like asking the police to help them with cockroaches or buying sprays for their aching legs. The police urges people to use the number "#9110" instead for such requests.
